Online Dating Reviews and Advice
First Date Topics to Avoid
If you've met someone you like on an online dating site and you've been chatting or emailing online for awhile you may feel like you can already talk to them about anything. It's fabulous if you already feel that way after connecting on an online dating site! However, no matter how long or short of a time you may have known someone, there are still certain topics that are good to avoid on a first date. Take my advice and avoid the following topics and you will still have a world of great things to talk about on your first date without scaring your date away!
Gross Stories are not the best way to go on your First Date
My mother is a nurse, and she has just started dating again after my father passed away a few years ago. Now I've never been on any of my mother's first dates, but I know from having many a conversation with her that she loves to talk about her experiences as a nurse. Unfortunately many people (including myself) who are not in the medical profession (or the law enforcement or plumbing professions, for instance) have little to no desire to hear about the gross or horrifying anecdotes that go with the job. They're not exactly the best first date material!
If the first date goes well and you start getting to know each other better, then you can start sharing those more gruesome stories. It's best to leave these topics out of the first date conversation though.
Your first date may be your ex-date if you talk about your Exes!
If you have an ex-husband, ex-wife, ex-boyfriend, or ex-girlfriend, don't talk about them on your first date. You want your first date to focus on you and how wonderful you are, not wonder why you're dwelling so much on past loves. First dates can be stressful enough without trying to compete with someone's ex who is not even there!
Furthermore, you never want to give your first date the impression that you're still hung up on an ex or that you have significant emotional baggage. On your first date stick to topics relating to who you both are, what you like to do, and what you think about the world. Leave your ex-dates in the past!
First date taboo phrases: Wasn't fair, didn't like it, how awful
On your first date, try to avoid wholly negative topics. You don't want to come across to your first date as a complainer or someone who finds other people's pain interesting. Avoid talking about the mechanic who screwed you over or the horrible car accident you once witnessed. It's hard to get a good impression of someone on a first date when all you do is complain about the atrocities of life. Yes, they exist; and yes, sometimes it can be helpful or comforting to talk about them. But not on the first date.
