Although I would actually argue that you're safer and better off with someone you met through an online dating site for several reasons. Furthermore, by the time you meet someone from an online dating site in person, chances are you already took the time to get to know them a certain amount. If you met someone at a party and then go out on a date, you probably know much less.
So basically the rule about meeting up with someone you met on an online dating site is to exercise basic caution, and not to meet your online date in person until you feel like you know him/her a little bit. And a bit of familiarity gained through an online dating site not only makes you safer, it will also make your date more successful and less awkward! It's win win!
