Online Dating

Can you feel safe meeting someone from an online dating site?

You are just as safe meeting up for a date with someone you met on an online dating site as you are meeting someone you met at a party or from a friend of a friend. It's true that you don't know everything about them, and yes there are some bad people out there. But the only way to be completely safe is not just by avoiding online dating sites, but by avoiding all dating whatsoever. Which frankly doesn't sound like much fun to me!

The thing to do when meeting someone from a party or from an online dating site is to maintain a normal level of caution and common sense. Go on your date to a public place like the movies or a restaurant. Don't go back to his/her place until you feel like you know them better. Using an online dating site doesn't make the person any more or less safe than anyone else.

Although I would actually argue that you're safer and better off with someone you met through an online dating site for several reasons. First, many online dating sites, like Great Expectations, screen their members by meeting them in person or other methods. This gives you one more layer of security.

Furthermore, by the time you meet someone from an online dating site in person, chances are you already took the time to get to know them a certain amount. If you met someone at a party and then go out on a date, you probably know much less.

So basically the rule about meeting up with someone you met on an online dating site is to exercise basic caution, and not to meet your online date in person until you feel like you know him/her a little bit. And a bit of familiarity gained through an online dating site not only makes you safer, it will also make your date more successful and less awkward! It's win win!
